How long for a skin infection to clear?
Q. I had a small infection of the hair folicle several weeks ago that seemed to blow up into a bigger infection. I saw a doctor and he prescribed a 7-day oral antibiotic (Keflex) and said to use OTC antibiotic ointment (Polysporin) and a thick bandage. I've been doing this and it has been a week now. The infection looks better but there is still some minor leakage that can be seen when changing the bandage. Does these infections normally take more than a week to clear? Or would this mean that the antibiotic isn't working very well and need something stronger?

A. A staph infection of the skin (which is most likely the organism) can take 7 to 14 days to clear, typically. But it depends on the severity of the infection, how big it is, and the type of staph being dealt with. Since it seems to be responding to anti-biotics, it is probably working but it will just take another week or so. But you can ask the doctor to be sure. The oral antibiotic will most likely not clear the infection on its own. That is more as a precaution to prevent the infection from spreading deeper into the tissue. So he will probably tell you to continue the topical antibiotic for another week. If it still hasn't cleared by then, he will probably need give you a stronger topical anti-biotic

How long does yeast infection medication take to fully work?
Q. I was prescribed pms-Fluconazole for a yeast infection (a pill you take once) and I took it on Tuesday. The package says that the symptoms should be gone within a couple days, and they are, but it does not say how long it takes to completely get rid of the infection. I know you shouldn't have sex while you have a yeast infection so you don't pass it back and forth and am wondering if I am clear for intercourse again or how long I should wait. Any advice would be great.
Asked by Ash - Mon Dec 22 12:50:07 2008 - - 5 Answers - 2 Comments

A. The information should come on the packaging or the instruction sheets for your prescription. You could always call the pharmacy- you don't have to give your name, and they would be the best ones to answer that question. Or call your doctor. If it was me, I would definitly wait a week from the time I started the medicine. But I am not a doctor, I can't give you the appropriate advice.

How long will a yeast infection take to cure without any special treatment?
Q. I recently had a urinary tract infection, due to unsanitary bathroom conditions at school, and took antibiotics. though the UTI was cured, a yeast infection developed and is now the main source of discomfort. I'm planning on picking up monistat from the store, but I'm also wondering if it is okay to just let it heal naturally... and how that would work and how long. thank you.

Cat with bladder infection - How soon will antibiotics start working?
Q. My cat has a bladder infection, diagnosed by a vet three days ago. He is on antibiotics and just took the 4th dose of 14 (two weeks), but I just found that he peed on a pillow in our living room. Is this normal or should he be using the litter box by now?
Asked by smilegrl623 - Mon Jan 14 18:07:07 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Antibiotics will clear up any infection and won't necessarily affect his litterbox behavior at all. Hopefully when he is out of pain and the crystals are not hurting him anymore he will become a "good boy" again.

How long does a infant ear infection take to go away with drops?
Q. My 13 month old has/had a ear infection. Her Dr. prescribed her ear drops and an oral antibiotic. The drops said instill 1 drop into both ears every 2 hours. And the Oral antibiotic was to be taken for 5 days. I gave her the ear drops every 2 hours except for over night to allow her to sleep through the night in peace. And I gave her the antibiotic for the 5 days like stated. With this going on for a whole week (5/6) days do you think the ear infection would be gone by now?
Asked by Crj208 - Fri Dec 5 22:18:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They can last for up to about 10 days. The drops only help with pain while the antibiotic heals. If your daugher only needed the antibiotic for 5 days then I am guessing that is was not very bad. I had to do it for about 10 days. Your daughter should start feeling better any day now.

How do I prevent a yeast infection while on antibiotics?
Q. I just started taking Amoxicillin for a minor infection - twice a day for ten days. I've never gotten a yeast infection from antibiotics before and I don't know how likely it is that I'll get one this time. Is there anything I can do to prevent it? I know plain white yogurt helps. Should I do that before or during my antibiotic course? Any other advice? Thanks. I should have clarified. I have an ear infection.

A. Yes, my doctor always told me to eat yogurt when I was taking antibiotics. It helps to restore the good bacteria in your digestive system. Take 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take the antibiotic.

How to treat an infection in my cat?
Q. My outdoor farm kitty came to the house with the side of his head swollen and a large scab. Later in the day, he scratched it off and I've drained a lot of infection out if it (very smelly). I can't get him to the vet because we have a foot of snow on the ground and can't get anywhere. Is there anything we can do to help him until we can get out to the vet? He is eating just fine and acts normal, other than his open wound that is constantly draining. I imagine he got bit by something as he is a hunter.
Asked by Jennifer L - Sun Jan 21 09:17:03 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi Jennifer...abscesses should continued to be drained and be cleansed ONLY with water and antibacterial soap until you can see a veterinarian. Please do not use any hydrogen peroxide as this will push the bacteria deeper into the wound and cause death to healthy surrounding tissue. Marvista Vet on abscesses: As soon as you can get to the vet they will evaluate and flush the wound out more if necessary and prescribe antibiotics to thwart secondary infections as a result of the abscess.

Q. I have an abscessed tooth, it's something I've been treating at home with different home remedies. I don't have insurance and can't afford to go to a dentist. I found a small bump behind my ear the other day. It's somewhat squishy and painful to the touch. Could this be the infection growing, or another problem all together? A. A tooth abscess or root abscess is pus enclosed in the tissues of the jaw bone at the tip of an infected tooth. Usually the abscess originates from a bacterial infection that has accumulated in the soft pulp of the tooth. There are three types of dental abscess. A gingival abscess that involves only the gum tissue, without affecting either the tooth or the periodontal ligament. A periapical abscess starts in the dental pulp. A periodontal abscess begins in the supporting bone and tissue structures of the teeth. Common symptoms of an acute tooth abscess is a toothache or a persistent, throbbing pain at the site of the infection.[1] Putting pressure or warmth on the tooth may induce extreme pain. How soon does ringworm infection show symptoms?
Q. My kitty and my family members have been exposed to a kitten with ringworm infection for 1 to 2 days, how long will my kitty and humans show symptoms if infected and what is the typical symtoms? Is itching a first sign? If my cat does not show symptoms, could it be possible she still is the carrier and can transmit to others? Do I need to treat a cat not showing symptoms? What is the best way to treat it? Thank you all!
Asked by PregBeauty - Mon Jun 23 21:22:30 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Since ringworm is a fungus, it will spread at varying rates. More than likely though, your kitty would start to show signs within a week. Look for circular spots that look like dry skin, or reddish in color. If you think that the fungus has indeed been transferred to your household, the first step is to control it. The vet is always an option, but the costs of "diagnosis" are pretty high. They test hairs from your pet to see if the fungus is detectable, and only then will they prescribe medication. If you are interested in trying the home remedy first (there are 30+ types of ringworm, but the majority are easily taken care of)... here is a good article about using iodine to kill the fungus: Even better, all the supplies are… [cont.]

Q. I have heard quite a few stories lately about infections and iuds, what are the odds of this? I meanhas it happened alot? If i were to get an infection how would i know?
Asked by Mami D Hayzea(2yr) Y Cruz(1yr) - Thu Jan 28 16:38:26 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The IUD itself doesn't increase your risk of acquiring an infection, contrary to popular belief. The insertion does increase your risk for a short period of time, but if you've got an experienced doctor, this isn't a problem. IUDs are the most popular form of reversible birth control worldwide, they're really not as scary as most people seem to think. If you DO get an STI, then having an IUD in place can make it more serious; that's why they didn't like giving them to people who weren't in a monogamous relationship for the longest time. It's not a requirement anymore; if you're going to sleep around, then use condoms for protection from infections, and you'll be fine. You'd know if you got an infection by the same means that you'd find out… [cont.]

What is the difference between a bladder infection and a urinary tract infection?

A. You could try soaking your foot in a bath of warm water, maybe with some Epsom salts mixed in. That might draw out the infection. Be sure to dry your feel thoroughly afterwards and put on clean socks, or go barefoot as much as you can around the house.
